A total of 152 Junior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) have commenced a four-month training course at the Lugore Training School under the UPDF 4th Infantry Division in Gulu District.

The Commander of the 4th Infantry Division, Major General Felix Busizoori, commended UPDF leadership for decentralising training programmes to formations and lower command levels, saying the approach has strengthened professionalism across the Force.

“A professional soldier must train hard in order to fight effectively,” Maj Gen Busizoori said, noting that modern military operations require mastery of essential skills.

“You must understand movement, map reading and the use of modern GPS systems if you are to pursue and defeat the enemy.”

He said training goes beyond technical competence, stressing its role in shaping the character and mindset of soldiers.

“Training builds discipline, endurance and the right attitude. It prepares you to endure hardship and to execute your duties effectively in different operational environments,” he said.

The junior NCOs course will expose trainees to a wide range of military disciplines, including new operational skills, initiative-taking, and a deeper understanding of UPDF ideology.

Maj Gen Busizoori added that the UPDF places high value on both individual and collective training, describing it as a foundation for career growth within the Force.

“Training builds confidence, determination and leadership ability. It also prepares you for promotion and effective command,” he said.

He urged the trainees to remain resilient and committed throughout the course, emphasising the importance of successfully completing the training.
